Department Overview

KCHRC boasts a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit designed to handle a wide range of critical medical and surgical situations. Our comprehensive unit is structured to ensure optimal care for our patients through specialized units and advanced medical technology.


Unit Capacities

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU): 15 beds

Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU): 15 beds, including 7 isolation rooms

Step Down Unit: 6 beds

Total Capacity: 36 beds

Our critical care unit is staffed round-the-clock by a highly skilled medical team, including:

  • Physicians/Oncologist/ Haematologist

  • Surgeons/ Oncosurgeon

  • Radiation oncologist

  • Medical officers

  • Qualified nursing staff

  • Speciality consultant as needed

State-of-the-Art Facilities

  • Our ICU is equipped with cutting-edge medical technology to provide the highest level of care, including:

  • Bedside Pendant Mounted Advanced Multi-para Monitors: Central recording system (Drager + Philips)

  • Ventilators: Both invasive and non-invasive (Drager)

  • Central Monitors

  • Multi-functional Electrical Mobile Beds

  • Defibrillators: Automated and manual

  • Portable X-ray Units: Available in each ICU

  • Pneumatic System: For fluid sample and medicines transportation

  • Central Speaker: For emergency code announcements

  • Other Required Bedside Facilities

  • Ventilator-to-Bed Ratio: Unprecedented in our region

  • Nurse-to-Bed Ratio: Ideal 1:2 for non-ventilated patient and 1:1 for patient on ventilator,  provide personalized patient care

Our critical care unit is dedicated to managing tertiary critical care patients with a broad spectrum of medical conditions, including:

  • Oncological emergencies

  • Septic shock with Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS)

  • Post-operative complications

  • Acute exacerbation of COPD/bronchial asthma/severe breathing problems

  • Acute Kidney Injury requiring haemodialysis

  • Various infections

  • Snake bites

  • Severe wounds, falls, and burns

  •  Drug reactions/overdoses

  • Complex electrolyte imbalances

  • Comprehensive rehabilitation services, including early nutrition, patient mobilization, physiotherapy, core body strength restoration, and patient motivation
